Mnemosyne is the Greek goddess of memory. When I was about three years old, I remember marching through the room behind my older sister, playing a makeshift drum made of chopsticks and a bowl, all the while singing without words. This is my earliest musical memory.

Gary Higginson was born in West Bromwich which, although then semi-rural, also forms part of the industrial Black Country. His first musical experience, listening to his father’s constant singing at home, led him to joining the local church choir at the age of seven, the next year beginning piano lessons with the choirmaster. The constant presence of the church and its music has been a strong influence on him ever since and led to singing in an early performance of Britten’s War Requiem.

Music by Schubert, Scriabin, Janacek and Ravel. A wonderful CD and a great performance. Simon started playing piano at the late age of 15, for Mikael Kanarva, in the communal music school in his hometown of Helsingborg. Three years later, he won his first national competition, performed in a handful of countries in Europe, and played for many great teachers such as Erik Tawastijerna, Eugene Indjic, Ilja Schepps, Jiri Hlinka, Dimitri Bashkirov and Per Tengstrand.

Nordic Piano Scenes is a very personal and dear vision,
sprung out of a deep connection to the nature of the northern
countries and the love for classical music (Ilona Saura).
